The biggest adjustment made by anyone with Bella going to school wasn't made by her, but by me: I've been astounded at the number of assignments and deadlines I have to keep up with just for her kindergarten class. Field trip fees, fundraiser money, weekly show-and-tell assignments, Thursday's wardrobe color, Friday's letter object ... her class is active!

Once a month, she has a family project she's supposed to complete with one or more members of her family. She and I had some fun with the latest assignment: read a favorite book, then decorate a pumpkin like the child's favorite character from the story. Bella chose the book Fancy Nancy and the Posh Puppy. (Fancy Nancy is a little girl who loves all things fancy, including fancy words -- parfait for ice cream, chauffeur for driver, etc.) Here's a picture of Bella's pumpkin (though I think we aged Fancy Nancy by about ten years -- just couldn't get the childlike appearance with the face).

Wouldn't it be interesting to see how creative adults could be with their favorite literary characters? I'd have a hard time choosing my favorite. How about you -- what's your favorite literary work, and which character would you portray with your pumpkin?

That is so cute! I think it turned out great.
I think my favorite would have to be Jayber Crow by Wendell Berry but I have no idea how I would make him a pumpkin. Maybe I would just plant the pumpkin seeds in his honor? :)
How about you?
hmmm... this time of year? That would be Poe. And it would be fun to make a Poepumpkin. He has kind of a round face anyway. With a jaunty bowtie.
That is sooo cute!
It is amazing how busy K5 can be. I remember feeling that way when Logan was at school for 2 years.
Hmmm, what would mine be?
Crazily enough, probablly Laura Ingalls Wilder. My pumpkin could have a fun little yarn braided wig, and wear an apron.
Cute post, I enjoyed it.
See ya'll tomorrow!
No doubt, I can totally empathize with the homework assignments. I remember McClain and I making a cheerleader pumpkin when she was in 1st grade. I'll have to show you pictures sometime. The school auctioned them off and raise quite a bit of money. I think the next year they started the Literary characters. Cool idea!
If we're using a pumpkin I'd like to do Cinderella. Since the story also uses a pumpkin. We should all get together and do this!
